Public Input on Bradley Park’s Christopher Columbus Statue

August 5 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The Peoria Park District will host a public input session on Wednesday, August 5 at 5:30pm.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the meeting will be held virtually with limited in-person participation.  A zoom link will be provided on Facebook for virtual participation.
*For those wishing to participate in person, pre-registration is required to ensure that we don’t exceed the 50 person maximum at the Noble Center.    Please register here to reserve your spot.  Thank you!*
The Christopher Columbus Statue was acquired and placed in the center of the intersection of Columbia Terrace and North Institute Place by the developers of the Uplands subdivision near Bradley Park in 1902. The statue was sculpted by Alfons Pelzer and manufactured in Salem, Ohio. An identical statue was displayed at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in the early 1890’s. In 1947 the statue was relocated to a spot in Bradley Park.
Several times during the years, the statue has been repaired/renovated due to deterioration and vandalism.
In 2007, the Park Board approved the Inventory of Park District Historic Resources with the Christopher Columbus Statue included on the list. According to the Peoria Park District policy manual section 22.00 Historic Preservation, any change (which includes alteration, reconstruction, rehabilitation, or demolition) requires a public hearing with appropriate parties notified.
Recently there have been requests from the public and trustees to discuss the appropriateness of the statue in the park and/or the message to be conveyed concerning the statue in the park.
Potential options for the statue may include:
• Leave as is
• Remove statue and sell/give away or put in storage
• Remove statue and leave pedestal for future artwork
• Remove statue and pedestal completely
• Leave statue and change interpretive signage
• Leave statue, modify it to resemble a different historical figure of the time, & change interpretive signage
